Coffee Benefit 7 on Health ~ Liver Cirrhosis

Drinking four cups of coffee per day may reduce the risk of liver cirrhosis by approximately 30%. Studies show that coffee not only has detoxifying properties that cleanse the liver, but the antioxidants found in coffee also work as free-radical scavengers to ward off disease and illness. A research team at the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases analyzed data from a nutrition survey of 16,000 people. The results showed that those who drank caffeinated beverages exhibited lower incidences of liver injury--though it is unknown exactly how caffeine benefits liver function. Another study by researchers at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo found that coffee drinkers were half as likely as nondrinkers to develop liver cancer.

Coffee Benefit 6 on Health ~ Cancer

Cancer is one of the hardest fought diseases in society today. Research has been quite extensive and ongoing. Anytime a preventive is found, it is one-step closer to a cure. It has been found that the antioxidant in coffee called methylpyridinium has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of colorectal and other cancers. This compound is produced during the roasting process of coffee beans and found almost exclusively in coffee. The reason for the preventive is thought to be due to the way this compound boost one’s blood enzymes. It is definitely not a cure, but anything that can help lower the risks of developing cancer is a step in the right direction for everyone’s well being. Please continue to support researcher’s efforts to find a cure for cancer, and drink coffee to lower your risks.

Coffee Benefit 3 on Health ~ Alertness and Endurance

The most common reason people drink coffee (other than for pleasure) is to stay alert--especially in the morning or when working late, or when cramming for test! In order to get the most effective results that coffee can deliver in alertness, research has shown that it works best if it is spread out through the course of the day. It is like giving yourself little coffee boost breaks. Instead of drinking two cups at once, have one cup in the morning and another an hour or two later.

Getting ready to hit the gym hard? Studies show that coffee can improve your workout endurance and performance by having a cup before working out. The caffeine in coffee is shown to boost short-term athletic performance, help enhance concentration, and slightly increase metabolism, which can help in weight loss.

Coffee Benefit 1 on Health ~ Asthma

Coffee has many great benefits other than just tasting good! It actually has some pretty fantastic health benefits! Over the next several blogs we will be discussing these benefits. If I should miss one, or if you have your own to add, feel free to comment!

Coffee is believed to help open the airways of people with asthma by just drinking a couple cups. This however is no recommendation to replace any current traditional doctor prescribed medicines, but coffee does have similar properties to asthma medicine - the caffeine in coffee is similar to a medicine called theophylline, which is used to treat asthma symptoms. Pretty cool eh?

Coffee Tip

Everyone loves a piping hot cup of coffee, but as we all know - coffee too hot will scald your tongue or roof of your mouth and can be dangerous when driving. For those days, when you only have enough time to brew your TAGJOE and run, here is a tip that will lower the risks of burns when sipping and driving.

The next time you make a pot of TAGJOE Coffee, what doesn’t get drank out of the pot (if that is ever the case) after it has cooled pour it into a ice cube tray. I prefer the mini ice cube trays as pictured above. Freeze the coffee and when solid, empty try of coffee cubes into a Ziploc freezer bag and store in freezer. Next time you are on the go, just drop a cube or two into your travel mug of coffee and you will be good to sip and fly in the fast lane!

Is Coffee really a Guilty Pleasure?

Some would say that coffee is a guilty pleasure as it is not essential to ones well being or livelihood, but is that really the case? Yes, coffee is delicious like chocolate, comforting like chicken noodle soup, social like a fine wine, warming like a toasty fireplace, but does that make it a guilty pleasure?

Chocolate is said to be a guilty pleasure but for some, without it could be crucial for those around them. Chocolate has heath benefits such as it can help relax blood pressure, good for your heart by keeping your heart and cardiovascular system running well, lowers blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, stimulates endorphin production, which gives a feeling of pleasure, acts as an anti-depressant, and it simply taste good! With all of that, how can it be bad for you or considered a guilty pleasure? Coffee has some of these same health benefits, and taste good too. In fact, not only does coffee compare similar to chocolate it has all the great benefits of chicken noodle soup. A stretch you say? Not really.

Chicken soup is the classic mother’s remedy for cold and flu’s and research has shown that mom is right on that mark. One study found that even when chicken soup was diluted 200 times; it still interfered with the substances that trigger colds. Other studies found that hot soup can break up congestion and thin out mucous secretions. Okay, coffee has never been linked directly with healing colds or flu’s but it has been proven that both regular and decaffeinated coffee contain significant amounts of antioxidants and that coffee consumption is now being linked to the lowered occurrence of cases of certain cancers and chronic diseases. One study, conducted by the Harvard University School of Public Health, shows that the risk for developing Type II diabetes is lower among regular coffee drinkers. A far bit even better than chicken noodle soup you might say.

Guilty pleasure? Maybe, but with real benefits. Coffee fits in anyone’s world whether it is for health benefits, comfort, social, or simply because it taste delicious.

My Office Desk Coffee

I recall when I had my very first office job, with my own little office door and its singular window out looking the staff parking lot. The quarters were small, but I loved it. Why - because although it may have been small I was still able to bring in my personal coffee maker. Back then TAGJOE wasn’t available. I either had to bring in my own coffee or use what the company offered which came in huge boxes and lord knows how long ago it was roasted little lone ground. Every cup tasted like the last cup – bitter and stale.

Having the advantage of having my own little coffee maker in my office eliminated that dreaded first bitter swallow to numb the senses to the rest to follow. I could bring in my own coffee. Well it soon caught on that my office was the spot to be for that morning cup of coffee and I began to feel more like a coffee café than an office employee. If it wasn’t other employees coming to grab a cup out of my pot, it was the one who snuck my coffee out of my office to brew in the company break room. The disappearing coffee and playing coffee host to fellow employees was beginning to get a bit pricey. Eventually I just took my pot home.

Fast forward to current days. I still work in an office, but it is a much larger office with a much better view and once again I have my personal coffee maker in my office – but there has been a drastic change. My coffee now has on each and ever packet – From the Desk of Dorothy. I no longer have to cringe over the company break room coffee, nor do I have a problem with coffee mysteriously disappearing from my office. I do however still have a pretty decent flow of fellow employees begging for a cup of my Joe. But that I can live with for now.. Thanks TAGJOE for coming through for this up and coming coffee loving office employee.

Sincerely;
Dorothy

Proper Coffee Storage

You may hear people tell you what the proper way to store coffee is. Some will tell you it is in the refrigerator, others say freezer, some say in a glass jar, some say keep it away from sunlight, and it can go on and on. So what exactly is the proper way to store coffee you ask… the truth is, all of them are right, under the right circumstances that is. It all depends on how you buy your coffee.

Proper coffee storage is essential in preserving the flavor of the coffee. Coffee beans contain volatile oils that give coffee its characteristic flavor. When coffee beans are roasted, those oils are released. The grinding process speeds up the flavor loss even more. To get the best flavor from your coffee, you should brew it within two weeks of roasting, and immediately after grinding.

Your coffee storage choice will depend on how you buy your coffee but regardless, one thing will not change – protecting the flavor. In order to protect the flavor of your coffee you will need to store it in a container that will keep out air and moisture, the two key components that will rob your coffee of flavor.

Ground coffee: Store your ground coffee at room temperature in an airtight container. Vacuum seals are the best option but avoid clear glass.

Whole coffee beans: Store your whole coffee beans also in an airtight canister at room temperature.

If you buy your coffee in bulk – more than you can use in a week- you can store a weeks worth in the freezer for a week. The longer you store coffee, the more flavor is lost. When storing coffee (bean or ground) in the freezer make sure to keep air and moisture. Put your coffee in an airtight container or zippered plastic freezer bag and make sure you have vacuumed the air out. If using a freezer bag, make sure you wrap the bag in one or two layers of plastic wrap and follow up with aluminum foil. Refreezing coffee is a no no! Freezing naturally dehydrates items over time and with coffee, that means loss of flavor.

Fundamentals of Coffee Cupping

Coffee, like wine, has distinct characteristics, due to factors like the variety of bean, the soil, the agriculture nearby, climate, and roasting/processing methods. As a result, coffee is 'cupped' in the same way wine is 'tasted'. TAGJOE coffee is scored by one of the world's top cuppers, to ensure quality.

More about cupping (from Wikipedia):

Coffee cupping, or coffee tasting, is the practice of observing the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee.[1] It is a professional practice but can be done informally by anyone or by professionals known as Master Tasters. A standard coffee cupping procedure involves deeply sniffing the coffee, then loudly slurping the coffee so it spreads to the back of the tongue. The coffee taster attempts to measure aspects of the coffee's taste, specifically the body (the texture or mouthfeel, such as oiliness), sweetness (the perceived sweetness at the sides of the tongue, acidity (a sharp and tangy feeling at the tip of the tongue, like when biting into an orange), flavour (the characters in the cup), and aftertaste. Since coffee beans embody telltale flavours from the region where they were grown, cuppers may attempt to predict the coffee's origin.

Your Coffee Mug

Have you ever wondered if your coffee mug has any effect on the taste of your coffee? I am guessing most don’t give it a second thought, but there are some types of cups that can affect the way your coffee taste.

The best type of coffee cups to drink your coffee from is porcelain mugs or cups. It is not porous and holds the warmth of your coffee longer, which helps to preserve and prolong the flavor you enjoy. Stainless steel as in travelers coffee mugs run close in first place to the porcelain mug. They also hold the heat of the coffee exceptionally well and do not remove the flavor or transmit other flavor into your coffee.

The worst are paper, plastic, and Styrofoam cups, and waxed protected paper cups. Each of these forms of cups can transfer the cups flavor into your coffee. There is even debate of the safety in using these forms of coffee drinking containers in that when the cup is filled with a hot liquid, they can possibly release harmful toxins into your drink.

To some, the container that houses their hot cup of coffee is never given a second thought. Some don’t have the coffee in their cup long enough for the container to have any reflection whatsoever on the coffee. Some people’s taste bud are less sensitive than others. What it really boils down to in the end is what you prefer to drink your coffee in. However, if you have sensitive taste buds and/or are a coffee connoisseur, consider drinking your coffee from only porcelain coffee mugs and see for yourself if you taste a difference. What do you use to drink your coffee?

Private Label Coffee For the Bed and Breakfast

Private label coffee can be used for many reasons, but in a bed and breakfast, you can add your logo to the coffee pouch and keep the pouches in the entry way to the B&B or place some packages in the rooms for the guests to take a long when they leave. Since the packages of fresh roasted coffee has the B&B logo on it, guests will have a reminder of the name.

The coffee is fresh roasted as you order it and not ahead of time, which makes it fresher when you open the pouch to make a premium coffee. The organic coffee is a mail order coffee so that anyone anywhere can have a private label coffee with their logo.
